News that our Libertarian chums favourite poster boys for the right-for-everyone to have free speech, the sartorial anti-Islamic Scottish Defence League, are to stage a protest in Lockerbie on the 27th of March has aroused much anger in the local community. None more so than in my own household, as the 27th is my birthday and the last thing I want to do is leave behind the jelly and ice-cream, drive over to Lockerbie and laugh at a handful of barely literate, bigoted racists locked inside a pub surrounded by Dumfries and Galloway's thin blue line.
Thankfully, the admirable John Dennis, Secretary of Dumfries TUC is in the process of mobilising the good and the great of D&G to go along and have a counter protest amble. I dare say Megabus will be dropping off other protesters from points North and South.
Unfortunately these mouth breathing sock puppets do not realise that the people of Lockerbie are sick to the back teeth of being known primarily for the fact that a bombed plane landed on their town. If the SDL/EDL believe they will find a warm reception from the local people they are very much mistaken and may find locals welcoming them in a similar vein to that which is normally associated with the Lockerbie and Moffat boys annual post agricultural show fisticuffs larks.
Allowing the English Defence League and the so called Scottish Defence League the right to assemble and promulgate their own special brand of race hate under the banner of free speech, is as defensible as allowing paedophiles into child care. They are the bastard offspring of the National Front and their godfathers, the Nazis.

Limiting or restricting speech is symptomatic of a police state. The EDL claim they are a one issue movement - they are against Islamic extremism. They, apparently, have members from various ethnic minorities, but are, never-the-less, branded "racist". They may very well be, but in the interests of fairness it would be nice to see the evidence.
As it stands we have groups and individuals who condemn them and applaud their special handling by the state. Those same groups and individuals, however, remain silent when Islamic groups demonstrate against western culture and threaten violence and death to those who oppose their hateful ideology.
So what's the agenda?

Okay - maybe some of the casuals ( and AP's) were into a bit of agro as well but that can be dealt with using BoP. Arrest those who brreak the law - leave others to air their grievance.
Scunnert, these fellers are not the natural progeny of J.S. Mill and Thomas Paine. In fact, they are, pure and simple, rabble rousing thugs. There is no great philosophy behind their actions, they simply hate people of a different creed and colour of skin. Their Seig Heils alone make this evident. Their attack on the cop in Birmingham wasn't just some over exuberance by pesky casuals.
What I really object to is their simplistic idea to share in some perceived grievance against McAskill over his release of Megrahi with the people of Lockerbie. As a nearby resident, with many friends in the town I can tell you that Lockerbie folk view this as cynical opportunism by scum, not Libertarian free thinkers alerting the world to the perceived threat of Islam. By far the vast majority of people I know there, believe Megrahi is innocent.
Mark I believe Megrahi was innocent and applaud MacAskill for his release. That these folks would choose Lockerbie as a venue for a demo is really offensive given the tragedy and grief that town has suffered. Still I would not silence them.
